Not really known. Probably both drugs and alcohol. I’ve heard stuff like Kevin Federline threatened to take the kids away from her and planned an emergency custody hearing. He agreed to call it off if she went back again. Then again, this is speaking of the 3rd time, I dunno for the first. Who knows.
Kfed threatened to sue for sole custody of the kids ,using her drug use as her being an unfit mother, he also planned to have her hair follicles tested to prove the use of drugs and what they were.
if you were married to k-fed and had to hear him perform, you would go straight to the drugs and alcohol. so ultimately, it was her dopey husband.

Her mom put her into rehab after she took an umbrella to a paparazzi SUV b/c Federline wouldn’t talk to her.
